Congratulations to Kathryn Bigelow, winner of the Best Director Academy Award for helming the gritty 2009 Iraq war drama, The Hurt Locker. A woman has never before won this category, and not only was it a historic moment it was a joyful one at that.

International Women's Day

Today is International Women's Day, its one-hundredth anniversary, in fact. An Oscar first?

Kathryn Bigelow, the director of the award-winning and Oscar-nominated Iraq war drama, The Hurt Locker, stands a very good chance of nabbing the Academy Award for Best Director—which would mark the first time ever a woman has achieved this honor. (She’s already blazed a similar trail: last Saturday, Bigelow became the first woman to ever win the Director’s Guild of America prize in its 60-year history.)
